HIV Risk Perception and Condom Use in the Sociocultural Context of Cartagena-Colombia.

ABSTRACT: This study points out the sociocultural influences on condom use among men and women in Cartagena. Family structure, gender roles and stereotypes are analyzed to establish a framework in which risk practices take place. Also, it takes into account that the notion of risk has to be understood as the result of the interplay of social dynamics which allow it to become meaningful. Even though condom use is certainly perceived by individuals, as a functional measure for HIV prevention, it is also, an ambiguous artifact within the sociocultural context. Consequently, condom use, in Cartagena, allows the emergence of social and culture resistance that continuously challenges HIV prevention and control programs in this city. RESUMEN: Este estudio precisa las influencias socioculturales sobre el uso del condón entre hombres y mujeres en Cartagena. Se analizan la estructura familiar, los roles del género y los estereotipos para establecer un marco en el cual las prácticas del riesgo tienen lugar. Se considera que la noción del riesgo debe ser entendida como el resultado de la interacción de las dinámicas sociales que la hacen significativa. Aunque el uso del condón es percibido ciertamente, por los individuos, como medida funcional para la prevención del VIH, él es también un artefacto ambiguo dentro del contexto sociocultural. Por lo tanto, el uso del condón en Cartagena, permite la aparición de la resistencia social y cultural que desafía continuamente la prevención y programas de control del VIH en esta ciudad.
